As a Backend Engineer, you will build and maintain the systems that sit between our AI and our customers: the APIs, data models and services that turn a continuous stream of detections into the dashboards and mobile apps our customers rely on every day.
You will work in a small, senior team with a direct line to our CTO, Product Managers and senior management, which means little distance between deciding something and shipping it. We are looking for someone who is comfortable leading projects, not just completing tickets: taking a problem, scoping it, building it, and owning it through to production.
This is a fully remote role. We are open to candidates within 2.5 hours of Singapore's time zone.
What You Will Be Doing
- Design, build and deploy scalable backend systems that power our AI platforms and our web and mobile applications.
- Lead projects end to end, from scoping and technical design through delivery, with real ownership of the outcome.
- Keep things fast as we grow. Apply solid data-structure and algorithm fundamentals so our APIs and database queries hold up as data volumes increase.
- Collaborate with our AI, Product and Engineering teams to shape the technical roadmap.
- Conduct code reviews and continuously improve the stability, performance and maintainability of existing systems.
- Partner with our Infrastructure team to roll out and manage cloud resources on AWS and other providers as needed.
- Use AI to move faster. Apply AI-assisted development tooling to your day-to-day work, writing, reviewing, testing and documenting code, and help the team get better at it.
Our Ideal Requirements
- At least 3 years of professional experience with Python, and specifically Django. This is a hard requirement, as Django is central to our stack.
- Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms, and the judgement to know when they matter.
- Comfortable leading projects. You can take an ambiguous problem, break it down, drive it to completion, and communicate progress clearly along the way.
- Solid API and data modelling skills, designing REST APIs and relational schemas that are clean to consume and hold up over time.
- Experience with task queues and asynchronous processing. Celery or similar, message brokers (Redis, RabbitMQ, Kafka or equivalent), caching strategies, and handling high-volume event data. We rely on queues and brokers heavily, so this matters here.
- Hands-on with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or similar), and an instinct for automating repetitive work in your day-to-day.
- Comfortable in a lean startup environment, working remotely. Self-directed, communicative, and reliable without close supervision.
